Geographical location of Lochranza and Catacol on the northern part of the Isle of Arran

Lochranza and Catacol

the twelfe Apostels at Catacol Bay

On the north side, surrounding the bay and the ruins of a 13th Century Castle, Lochranza is a typical picture-postcard village. Its popularity with wildlife seekers (there are hundreds of red deer throughout the area) and those wishing to walk the hills makes the village a well-known and much loved destination. The Whisky distillery, the ferry service to Kintyre, an art gallery in an old church and several places to eat and stay add to the charm of the area. There are four visitor moorings in Lochranza Bay on a first come, first served basis. A great walk is from Lochranza along Torr Meadhonach to Laggan and then northwards to the Cock of Arran, passing disused coal pits and salt pans, as well as Ossian's cave and back to Lochranza. The only Youth Hostel on Arran can also be found in Lochranza. Catacol, just a mile or so west is a tiny hamlet with access to Loch Tanna and a quiet pebble beach runs along the entire shoreline. There is also a great Hotel with Pub.
